ADELAIDE, April 21 AAP - Former Australian Education Union president Janet Giles hasbecome the first woman to be elected as state secretary of South Australia's peak unionbody, the United Trades and Labor Council (UTLC).
Ms Giles was elected unopposed, after the departure of long-serving former UTLC secretaryChris White.
"I believe I was elected first and foremost because UTLC delegates have confidencein my ability to do the job," Ms Giles said today.
"The fact that I am a woman is perhaps secondary, but nevertheless shows that thereis progressiveness among unions.
"My election helps overcome the public perception that the union movement is the bastionof blokes - decisions clearly are made on merit."
